London's Wellbeing & Sustainability Measure

Creating London's first Wellbeing & Sustainability Measure

Data Partnerships

Purpose

We joined the Greater London Authority as a key partner to help create London's first Wellbeing & Sustainability Measure, a commitment made in the Mayor of London's 2021 Manifesto. Our role was to contribute expert insight into the environmental dimensions of this groundbreaking framework, helping assess the city's success as a place to live and work for all its residents.

Approach

  • Joined the advisory and working group for the measure's development

  • Focused on the "improving our environment" aspects of the framework

  • Combined GLA datasets with our Tranquil City Index data to create a comprehensive environmental picture

  • Assessed environmental quality at borough and ward levels across four key dimensions: access to quality green and blue space, good air quality, low noise pollution, and improved tree canopy

  • Delivered final environmental data layers for integration into the wider measure and analysis

  • Contributed expert leadership, with our CEO, Grant Waters, serving on the expert panel launching the framework methodology at City Hall in early 2023

Results

We delivered a granular, evidence-based environmental picture that sits alongside social, economic and health dimensions in London's first comprehensive quality of life framework.

  • Wellbeing & Sustainability Measure launched in 2023 as London's first comprehensive framework for assessing city-wide quality of life

  • Delivered environmental data layers covering access to green and blue space, air quality, noise pollution and tree canopy at borough and ward level

  • Environmental data integrated into the wider Wellbeing & Sustainability Measure used by the GLA

  • Framework methodology launched at City Hall in early 2023

  • Continued advisory role following the measure's launch, supporting ongoing implementation and refinement
