Purpose

Building on Phase 1, we developed the Tranquil Pavement — an interactive web app helping Londoners discover and navigate tranquil spaces in the city. Through co-creation workshops, community events and targeted engagement across three London neighbourhoods, we grew the platform and tested how it could encourage more people to seek out calm in their everyday journeys.

Approach

  • Co-created the Tranquil Pavement web app (tranquilpavement.com) with development partner Outlandish

  • Held a co-creation workshop in January 2018 with pilot testers to shape the app's direction

  • Engaged across three London focus areas — City of London, London Bridge, and Deptford/Lewisham

  • Ran lunchtime walks for workers, weekend walks for residents and visitors, and school events reaching 20 schools

  • Led a two-week targeted social media campaign to grow the platform's user base

  • Partnered with local organisations, including Team London Bridge, Better Bankside and John Evelyn Community Garden

  • Collected user feedback to refine the platform and engagement strategy

Results

The Tranquil Pavement launched successfully and demonstrated strong early traction, validating the concept of tranquillity-led navigation. We achieved significant user adoption and community engagement across multiple London neighbourhoods:

  • 942 users and 1,436 sessions on the Tranquil Pavement web app by the end of experimentation

  • Instagram following grew from approximately 100 to 800 during the project period

  • Engaged 20 schools with presentations on urban tranquillity

  • Hosted multiple community walks and events across three London neighbourhoods

  • Achieved Technology Readiness Level 8 — system complete and qualified in a real environment

  • Co-creation confirmed that city dwellers have a real need for tranquillity in their daily routines

  • Refined strategy to focus first on active "builders" before scaling to wider audiences
